Report: Ferrari cuts Toronto lawyer a deal to replace his flooded California [w/video]

Filed under: Convertible, Performance, Etc., Videos, Ferrari, Canada, Luxury

Canadian lawyer Howard Levitt's 2010 Ferrari California gets stuck in a flood on his way to the airport.

A Ferrari might be the last vehicle you’d want to be driving when streets are submerged in water, but Toronto lawyer Howard Levitt was unfortunate enough to be behind the wheel of his $200,000+ Ferrari California when the tunnel he was driving through started to fill up. It was July, when parts of the Canadian city were flooded, but he was determined to make his flight to a court appearance the next day. So Levitt abandoned his metallic blue supercar in the middle of the street and took a cab to the airport, the National Post reports.

The car subsequently was totaled, and the insurance company covered the damage, so after completing his court assignment (and a column for the Financial Post that was due the same day), Levitt began to search for a replacement for his California – driving his 1994 Dodge Viper in the meantime. He decided on a 2014 California in the same metallic blue to replace his 2010 model. When he approached Ferrari to put in an order, the Italian marque was waiting for him, having heard of his mishap. The company offered him a “very generous” deal on a 2014 model; an undisclosed amount less than the after-options retail price of around $300,000.

The new Ferrari is expected to be delivered to Levitt in November, and we can only hope another flood doesn’t catch him off guard. We’re not so sure Ferrari would offer him another “very generous” deal. Feel free to watch the short video below, despite its rather static nature, which we included to precisely show the sad fate of Levitt’s fallen California.

Report: Drunken BBQ leads to 64 torched cars [w/video]

Filed under: Etc., Europe, Safety, Videos

Parking lot fire at French stunt show

The phrase “You’re doing it wrong,” doesn’t really even begin to describe this one. We’ll admit to being concerned whenever we have to park in a field. There’s always a fear, especially during dry weather, that one person’s negligence could cause the whole lot to go up.

And that’s almost exactly what happened in Noyal-Pontivy, Brittany, France. A cluster of cars were parked in a field outside a stunt show, when a pair of intoxicated men decided to break out the barbecue for a bit of tailgating (or whatever the French call it). The only problem being they didn’t bother to put their grill out before leaving for the show.

The resulting fast-moving blaze required 40 firefighters to bring it under control, along with a farmer cutting a fire line to contain the inferno. 64 torched cars later, the police were on hand to conduct their investigation into how the wildfire started. That’s when our two drunkards came forward, taking responsibility for their negligence. The men face two years in prison. Scroll down for video from the scene.

Followup: NASCAR driver’s girlfriend fined, banned for Papis slap [w/video]

Max Papis getting slapped

According to Fox News, NASCAR has handed down an indefinite ban from all series events and a $2,500 fine to Kelly Heaphy, girlfriend of Camping World Truck Series driver Mike Skeen. Heaphy open-hand slapped her boyfriend’s rival, Max Papis, after Sunday’s race.

The incident, which we reported on yesterday Tuesday, came about after Papis and Skeen came together while battling for third position on the last lap. Papis made some statements on air that led Heaphy to pounce, delivering a slap that reportedly led to Papis claiming his jaw had been dislocated. It’s unclear if punishments were handed down to the pit crews, which rumbled ahead of Heaphy slapping Papis. If you missed it the first time, you can catch the incident on video below.

Exclusive: Xbox One and Forza Motorsport 5 to race in Australia’s V8 Supercars [w/video]

Filed under: Motorsports, Sedan, Videos, Holden, Toys/Games, Australia, Racing

Xbox One Racing Team Holden VF Commodore V8 Supercars

Microsoft is going to get into the world of racing. Okay, so the tech-giant is already kind of involved in motorsports, with its subsidiary studio, Turn 10, responsible for the phenomenon that is Forza Motorsport. Forza, which goes toe-to-toe with Sony’s Gran Turismo series, is preparing to release its fifth version in the main series, appropriately called Forza Motorsport 5.

In conjunction with promotions of the new game and the launch of the next-generation Xbox One console (due out on November 22), Microsoft has announced that Xbox Australia will team with Triple Eight Race Engineering to launch the Xbox One Racing Team at the 2013 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

Bathurst, which runs on the Mount Panorama Circuit, will be included in Forza 5 and is one of the most grueling events on the V8 Supercars calendar, covering 620 miles (1000 kilometers). Winning it is as important to V8 Supercar teams as winning the Daytona 500 or Monaco GP is to NASCAR and Formula One teams.

Leading the charge for Xbox One Racing will be a Holden VF Commodore, finished in the traditional Xbox green. Triple Eight Racing, which has won Bathurst five times since its initial win in 2006, handled the oily bits of the VF Commodore. With a 640-horsepower, 5.0-liter V8, the saloon racer can get to 62 miles per hour in 3.3 seconds and will run up to 185 mph. Have a look at the thing coming together in the video below.

Besides a top-flight car, the Xbox One Racing Team will have no shortage of talented drivers – Andy Priaulx and Mattias Ekström will be at the helm. Priaulx has competed in the World Touring Car Championship, German DTM and has ran the Bathurst 1000 three times. Ekström may be a Swede, but we feel like there’s some Finnish blood in him somewhere. He’s ran in DTM since 2001, as well as completing stints in the World Rally Championship and NASCAR. He’s also captured three titles in the Race of Champions, which saw him best the legendary Michael Schumacher.

Official: 2014 Scion FR-S gets price increase, knee cushions [w/video]

Filed under: Car Buying, Coupe, Performance, Videos, Scion

2013 Scion FR-S - front three-quarter view

There’s not a lot of breathing room between the Scion FR-S and the Subaru BRZ – the two rear-drive coupes are about as close to badge-engineered as the auto industry gets in this day and age. In this case, that’s not a terrible thing, though, since they’re both so engaging to drive, but it does make for interesting comparisons when it comes to pricing and model year updates.

Late last month, Subaru announced pricing for its 2014 BRZ, which didn’t get much more than the inclusion of Aha internet radio compatibility and a $25,595 starting price – just $100 more than the 2013 model’s MSRP. A modest $25 increase in destination charges ($795) means that it starts at $26,390. For its part, Scion will ask $24,600 for a base 2014 FRS, plus $755 for delivery, for a total of $25,355. That means the Subaru is more still expensive, but it has more available equipment as well.

The 2014 Scion FR-S isn’t getting many tweaks, but a couple of small changes – knee pads on both the transmission tunnel and the door panels around the speaker grilles and a new standard 6.1-inch touchscreen audio system – are appreciated. (Note: 2013 model shown above).

If you’ve ever wondered what each and every little difference is between the two models, Driving Vancouver has an excellent new video that shows off all of the (2013) differences, right down to the trunk liners. Check it out by scrolling below.
