Video: Audi launches 2014 TDI models with hilarious spot

Audi TDI gas station

Audi has unveiled a set of new television spots that seek to continue the company’s proselytizing of diesel-fueled luxury cars to the American pubic. With TDI versions of the A6, A7, A8, Q5 and Q7 available for its 2014 model year range, this is a subject that’s obviously near and dear to the hearts of Audi marketers.

The first commercial, The Station, makes a play on the fact that many car buyers in the US don’t associate luxury cars (in this case an A8) with those green-handled pumps at the “gas” station. The second commercial, Range, is a lot more informative (albeit less fraught with screaming and slowmo), discussing just how easy it should be to find a diesel fueling station in your long-range TDI before you need to fill up.

Continue on below for a look at both new commercials, or to have Audi explain them to you in great detail, via its press release.

ETC: MO-TO wooden cars are begging for a spot on your desk [w/video]

MO-TO toy cars cop car

Normally when we report on promising crowd-funding projects, we’re writing about things and ideas that we’d like to see come to life. In the case of this new MO-TO wooden toy car collection from Candylab Toys, however, the online world has already voted loudly that the product should come to market. With close to 900 backers raising about $52,000 more than the Kickstarter goal of twenty grand, MO-TO designers Vlad and Florin seem to have a small hit on their hands.

One browse through the MO-TO promo page, and we can see why. The wooden cars may seem to be children’s toys in some of the images, but the forms inspired by muscle cars of the 1970s are destined for the office shelves and desks of car guys everywhere.

Beechwood bodies coated in glossy, high-contrast paint; rubber tires on white wheels; and long, low proportions all make the MO-TO cars pretty slick to look at. The Police Cruiser model is straight out of central casting and likely to be a favorite, but our hearts swoon for the fastback shape of the Rare Bird MOPAR tribute car. A $25 special model has long since sold out, but you can still get into the specially marked Kickstarter cars for $30 (not an outrageous price in the “heirloom quality” world of toys). Scroll below to see more in the MO-TO video.

Report: Hyundai/Kia will likely top Toyota/Lexus for No. 3 sales spot in May

Filed under: Car Buying, Japan, Hyundai, Kia, Lexus, Toyota

Hyundai and Kia grilles

If forecasts from TrueCar.com are accurate, Hyundai and Kia will be the only automakers to post sales gains in the month of May. Mildly interesting news in itself, but the real shocking nugget is that the Korean conglomerate is expected to pass Toyota (including its Lexus luxury brand) as the third-best-selling automaker in the United States.

Surely there are multiple reasons why Toyota and Lexus sales are expected to drop in May (when compared to April, 2011 and May of 2010), but parts and inventory shortages stemming from the devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan are front and center.

Credit also goes to Hyundai and Kia for the dramatic gains they have made on their Japanese and American competitors in the last few years, both in sales and in consumer perception. That said, Toyota seems likely to rebound in the coming months, so it will be an interesting exercise to follow the sales charts.

When all the numbers finally come in, TrueCar.com expects the month of May to show an eight-percent drop in sales from April. As you would expect, shortages of cars imported from Japan is partly to blame, but lowered incentives from all automakers is also cited as a contributing factor.

Report: 7th-generation Camry coming this fall, Prius expected to take top sales spot

The current Toyota Camry has been carrying the mid-size sedan torch since 2006, so it’s high time for a remake. According to WardsAuto.com, Toyota is busily prepping the next-generation car, and it could be here by the fall.

The Japanese automaker has been seeing increased pressure from the latest offerings coming out of Korea and the United States, and now it’s time to update its own high-volume money maker. While Toyota sold 327,084 Camrys in 2010 – still at the very front of the midsize family sedan class – that figure represents the lowest sales total for the vehicle since 1994.

Somewhat interestingly, though, Toyota apparently sees the Prius hybrid range taking over for the Camry as Toyota’s best-selling model. Time, as they say, will tell.

Volkswagen gets cute with the Piñata in latest Tiguan spot

2011 Volkswagen Tiguan commercial – Click above to watch the video after the jump

The guys and gals in Volkswagen advertising have proven to be a clever bunch, as commercials like the Darth Vader Super Bowl spot have garnered as many copycats as any spot in recent memory. The Das Auto team appears to have pulled off more cleverness with a spanking new spot for the 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan, and we can see the spoofs in our heads already.

Hit the jump to watch as a young man with some serious anger management issues takes out his angst on an SUV-shaped Piñata. The little guy hammering away is funny enough (we wonder how many times the bat ricocheted off the Piñata and onto his head), but then the candy-packing vault turns to reveal… you’ll have to hit the jump to see for yourself. Very clever, VW ad team.

We’re into camping as much as the next guy(s), and we’re really up for a few days of “roughing it” when it comes to a luxury coach motor home. And when we’re looking for the highest of the high end, few stand out more than the Ketterer Continental luxury motor home.

ketterer continental exteriorThis monster motor home features a Mercedes-Benz truck chassis, a massive, luxurious cabin that includes a real kitchen, dining with seating for five, a master bedroom with a king bed plus a shower, toilet and sky light. Actually, the main bedroom features a bath tub, too, so you can soak after a hard day of… whatever it is that the wealthy do when they’re “camping.”

And if you’re on an extended trip through the local RV parks, you probably don’t want to troll around in your mobile mansion, so this custom motor home also features a garage large enough to swallow a Smart Fortwo. Nissan Quest in new commercial

Nissan Quest shows off its useful cargo space in new ad – Click above to watch video after the jump

After skipping a model year in transition, the new 2011 Nissan Quest is on the scene, and Nissan needs to win over prospective minivan shoppers. So, it’s time for the ad onslaught to begin. In this new spot, Nissan highlights the Quest’s storage capacity by showcasing a harried mom balancing (literally) a Herculean shopping load, two kids and her poor cone-wearing pooch. Naturally, it all goes south, but the Quest magically saves the day and eradicates rank dog breath to boot. See for yourselves after the jump.

Video: Behind the scenes with Lexus’ ‘The Hard Way’ spot

Behind the scenes clip from Lexus' The Hard Way Chain commercial

Behind the Scenes of Lexus’ “The Hard Way – Chain” commercial – Click above to watch video after the jump

Lexus has released a new line of commercials that revolve around the theme “the hard way.” In one such commercial titled Chain, Lexus attaches cables to an LS sedan and raises it off the ground. The idea is to show you how strong the chassis is because it can support its own weight when lifted into the air. Since the theme is “the hard way,” the weight of just one single LS clearly isn’t enough and Lexus attaches four vehicles to LS and raises them all in the air.

The commercial does an excellent job of conveying Lexus’ solid built quality through a visual exercise. Is it real though? You bet’cha it is… and to show how they did it, Lexus has released a behind-the-scenes video and it’s hanging around after the jump. We also threw in a few more examples of Lexus’ “The Hard Way” campaign just for the fun of it. Enjoy!

Chevrolet billboard hand drawn

Chevrolet creates a cost-effective billboard advertisement – Click above to watch video after the jump

An affordable car should get an ad campaign to match. Following that logic, Chevrolet’s Middle Eastern advertising team put together a spot to highlight the low price of the all-new Cruze. Rather than slapping some highly-stylized photography work or clean studio images onto the side of a billboard, Chevy had an artist set to work on the blank canvas with a blue marker. For over eight hours.
