Spy Shots: Watch this Nissan GT-R Nismo attack the ‘Ring

Nissan GT-R Nismo spy video

Following yesterday’s spy photos of the Nissan GT-R Nismo at the Nürburgring, we’ve been informed that some intrepid spies have captured video of Super Godzilla lapping the track. We aren’t sure which turn the first clip is showing, but the second and third are almost certainly the tough right-hander known as Bergwerk.

Like the current GT-R, the Nismo, even with what might be a new exhaust system, isn’t a vehicle that sounds particularly good in a flyby. It’s more of just an intense whooshing noise. Take a look at the full video from RSR Nürburgring down below.

Video: Volvo C30 Polestar Concept hits the ‘Ring

Filed under: Motorsports, Performance, Videos, Hatchback, Volvo, Luxury

Scandinavian Touring Car Championship driver Robert Dahlgren drives C30 Polestar concept on the Nurburgring.

It’s been over three years since the Volvo C30 Polestar Concept was unveiled, driven by journalists and, as it turns out, lapped around the Nürburgring with Scandinavian Touring Car Championship driver Robert Dahlgren behind the wheel. For whatever reason, the video of the ‘Ring track session was only published by the tuning company yesterday. (Another discrepancy: Did Polestar’s C30 lose 46 horsepower somewhere along the line? Because the video states that it has 405 hp, while the company’s website quotes 451 hp…)

Whatever the case, the tuned Volvo is a beast, much more so than the similar-looking, 250-hp 2013 Volvo C30 Polestar Limited Edition that was sold last year. With 451 hp (sounds better than 405 hp, doesn’t it?), all-wheel drive, limited-slip differentials front and rear and Öhlins dampers, the Polestar Concept checks all of the right boxes for us.

For some reason, the video, which you can watch below, seems a bit vanilla to us. Perhaps the overly dramatic music takes away from the action and the beautiful sounds of the turbocharged five-cylinder engine?

Google China sign

Technology giant Google is a regular in headlines across the world, mostly for innovative hardware and online products, but this is the first time we’ve caught wind of the company stopping crime. A fascinating writeup on The Verge tells the story of Google doing just that – in China no less.

Sophisticated and non-stop anti-fraud measures used by Google’s AdWords to protect consumers from online scammers are at the heart of the story here. It seems that over the course of revising its security software back in 2010, Google started to see advertisements for normal-looking used car ads in China that had been flagged for removal.

As it turns out, the company’s algorithm for detecting fraud had stumbled upon a fairly long-standing practice of car theft within China. Thieves would take a photo of a random car on the street, use the photo to place an ad online, then steal the car before selling it to an unwitting buyer. The Verge article dives in to the hows and whys behind this unlikely method of halting (or at least attempting to halt) auto-theft in the far flung country – click through and enjoy the read.

Report: McLaren P13 technology mule seen at the ‘Ring

Filed under: Spy Photos, Coupe, Performance, Luxury, McLaren

McLaren MP4-13 mule - front three-quarter view, disugised

Seems the McLaren MP4-12C Spider recently seen at the Nürburgring wearing slight camo on its front end wasn’t hiding a facelift for the current car, but rather technology for its coming entry-level model known as P13. You’ll see that our spies have captured a new set of images of the mule, this time with a slightly less disguised nose (not that it matters much). The baby McLaren is being developed to take on Porsche, and it’s expected to get 450 horsepower from its 3.8-liter V8 and bow in 2015 or 2016.

McLaren’s monocell carbon tub will form its backbone, and a report in Autocar says styling will remind people of its ties to the P1. Using this new information, the suspicion is that camouflage could be hiding LED lighting up front.

The MP4-12C isn’t completely left out of the ‘Ring gossip, though – word is that an uprated version of the twin-turbo, 616-hp, 3.8-liter V8 is on its way, perhaps ringing up 641 hp.

Spy Shots: McLaren MP4-12C gets a nip, tuck and ‘Ring run

Facelifted McLaren MP4-12C caught camouflaged on the 'Ring - spy shot

It look like this McLaren MP4-12C is recovering from a touch of plastic surgery, and our spy shooters who caught it at the Nürburgring say that a minor headlight and bumper facelift is on the way. Juicier things could be happening in the rear, though, with the suggestion that horsepower from the 3.8-liter, twin-turbo V8 will rise from 616 horsepower to somewhere around 650 hp.

The fact that the changes are modest suggest we could see the facelifted model as soon as the Frankfurt Motor Show in about six weeks.

Video: Watch Tanner Foust hustle the Fiesta ST ’round the ‘Ring

Filed under: Performance, Europe, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Hatchback, Ford, Celebrities

The last time we saw Tanner Foust at the Nürburgring he was sloshing an SVT Raptor from kerb to kerb. Sticking with Ford but swapping keys, this time the drift champion and Top Gear USA host goes to the opposite end of the manufacturer’s tuner garage and plucks a Fiesta ST for ‘Ring duty.

The 179-horsepower front-wheel-driver acquits itself well by the end of the video. But be warned, Foust doesn’t set a ‘Ring time and it’s shot like a commercial… because that’s what it is. Still, you can enjoy all two minutes and 31 seconds of it below.

Video: Environmentalists Beware: Ring A Ding Ding celebrates the vintage two-stroke

Two-stroke porn of the motorcycle engine variety, that’s all this is. Deus Customs, a place that styles itself an “Emporium of Postmodern Activities,” held a confab over the Fourth of July for a group of those loud, buzzy little engines that make all kinds of power for their size and weight, and a lot of smoke to go with it.

There were more then fifty motos on the scene, from some classic Italian gear to Japanese motocrossers to mopeds. If clouds of burnt oil make you queasy, you’ll want to turn away. If you just can’t resist the sound of a swarm of gnats the size of motorcycles, then check out the video below, and go to the Deus Customs site for pics from the day.

Spy Shots: Aston Martin Rapide S undergoing testing on the ‘Ring

Aston Martin Rapide S spy shots

Word on the street is that Aston Martin is developing a faster, more powerful version of its Rapide four-door, a rumor fueled by new spy shots snapped on Germany’s infamous Nürburgring. The camouflaged prototype pictured above appears to pack a revised front end and tail, with larger intakes up front and a lip spoiler and reshaped bumper around back.

Underneath the revised fascias, sources expect to find the 510-horsepower V12 from the DBS to upgrade from the DB9-spec 470-hp mill already in place in the “standard” Rapide. Couple this with carbon-ceramic brakes and revised suspension, and the Rapide S is starting to shape up as a real barnstormer.

In short, if the existing Rapide is a four-door DB9, expect the Rapide S to come in as a four-door DBS – suitable for carrying 007 and not just one, but three Bond girls to their next mission or exotic locale.

Vehicles take flight at the ‘Ring’s Flugplatz

Filed under: Performance, Audi, Chevrolet, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche

chevrolet corvette zr1 gets air at flugplatz

All four off at Flugplatz – Click above for high-res image gallery

Many areas of Germany’s demanding 13-mile Nürburgring race track have became notorious in their own right, and have nicknames that hint at the challenge they present. One such section is called Flugplatz, which means “airport,” and the name certainly fits because this crest is enough to send some cars skyward.

Our friendly spy photographers decided to take a break from the cat-mouse-camo-car game, and trained their lenses on Flugplatz. In the gallery below, we have airborne units from Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan, all attacking the airport. Engineers like to use this lift-off point to check a variety of parameters. They also like to use Flugplatz to force suspension setups to reenact heavyweight prize fights.

We hear that drivers need to exceed 100 miles per hour at Flugplatz in order to play games with gravity. That makes the shots of the Panamera that much scarier, and the shots of the McLaren MP4-12C that much more amazing. Check out all of Flugplatz finest in our high-res image gallery.
