Are you a mega-wealthy car enthusiast that’s always eager to be first in line when it comes to supercars? Here’s a tip for you: Buy a plane ticket (or fuel up the jet) and head on down to Florida for the Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance.

Now in its fifth year, this upper-crust car show has been gaining momentum in the concours community, in part by scoring a lot of “firsts” for the auction portion of its event. Auctiongoers in past years have had a shot to buy the first U.S. examples of the Audi R8 5.2 FSI V10 and Spyder R8, Ferrari California and 458 Italia and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

On the docket for this year’s festivities? How does the 2012 Ferrari FF, 2012 Audi R8 GT and 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster. According to The DuPont Registry, each car will be the first of its kind sold in the United States. If you need to pick up something for your kids or the wife, Mercedes has also supplied a 2012 CLS63 Limited Edition, of which only 30 are to be made – and, of course, this is also the very first one sold.

*UPDATE: If you were booking travel arrangements to Florida with the goal of winning yourself the first example of Ferrari’s FF shooting brake… don’t. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County (the organization for whom the concours auction is to benefit) has issued a formal retraction – the Ferrari FF will not be available for auction. Please read the official press release after the jump for more details.

2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca in Grabber Blue

We eagerly await the day someone hands us the keys to a 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca. When that day arrives, we know the color of the will unfortunately not be Grabber Blue.

Regular production versions of the car will only be offered in either black or silver with red accents… and that’s a darn shame – we can say with certainty that the Boss 302 here at Barrett-Jackson looks damn good in Grabber Blue. All proceeds of the sale above the car’s MSRP will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to help find a cure for Type 1 diabetes.

Click here to read everything you need to know about the Boss 302 Laguna Seca, then check out our high-res image gallery below.

If you’re not playing Speed’s Online Fantasy Bid Game, now would be a good time to start – this Mustang is the current vehicle online users are bidding on, and you could end up winning a prize, like an Apple iPad.

*Update: The winning bid was a staggering $450,000.

Barrett-Jackson 2011: Big Toe Monster Bike *Update: w/video

Big Toe Monster Bike

Big Toe Monster Bike – Click above for high-res image gallery

Here we have another one of Speed’s Fantasy Bidding Game machines. Click here if you’d like to test your auction pricing mettle by guessing what this monster motorcycle will end up bringing at the auction block – you could end up winning a prize, like an Apple iPad.

Tom Wilberg, the Swedish creator of this machine, named it Big Toe, and it is indeed a chip off the old block… that is to say, Bigfoot, the most famous monster truck known to man. Clever, no?

We’re not going to argue with Wilberg or The Guinness Book of World Records when they claim that Big Toe is the World’s Tallest Rideable Motorcycle, but we do have to wonder if our definition of the word rideable differs with theirs.

In any case, this larger-than-life, tractor-tired, 5.3-liter V12-powered motorcycle is getting ready to roll across the auction block here at the 2011 Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, and you can see its official auction page here. Check out our high-res image gallery of the machine below.

*Update: Check out the video of the Monster Bike being auctioned after the break.

Barrett-Jackson 2011: Chevrolet offers up a drop-top Camaro set to lead the Indy 500 field *Update: w/video

2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Indy 500 Pace Car at Barrett-Jackson 2011

2011 Chevy Camaro Convertible Indy 500 Pace Car at Barrett-Jackson – Click above for high-res image gallery

Chevrolet is taking to the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale stage to auction off a special drop-top. The first of 50 limited-edition cars, this 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Indy 500 Pace Car will cross the stage before heading to lead the field at the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500.

The orange and white color combination matches that of the Indy-fied 1969 Chevrolet Camaro, which has since become a collectors item of its own. As far as we know, the Camaro ‘Vert will be a 2012 model, but everything here at Barrett-Jackson is listing this as a 2011.

Proceeds from the sale of this limited-edition Camaro will go the David Foster Foundation, which supports families with children in need of live-saving organ transplants. Charity cars have gone through the roof at the 2011 Barrett-Jackson auction and we would expect nothing different from this one.

The Camaro Convertible doesn’t have an official listing page, as it was something of a surprise for bidders, but you can watch Speed’s live online coverage here. Are you playing Speed’s Online Fantasy Bid Game? If not, test your auction pricing mettle by guessing what a series of featured vehicles will end up bringing at the auction block – you could end up winning a prize, like an Apple iPad. Enjoy!

*Update: The final gavel price? $225,000. Click past the jump to watch this Camaro cross the auction block.

Barrett-Jackson 2011: JFK’s 1963 Pontiac Bonneville ambulance? *Update

JFK's 1963 Pontiac Bonneville ambulance

JFK’s 1963 Pontiac Bonneville ambulance? Could be – Click above for high-res image gallery

Normally, events such as Barret-Jackson’s annual soiree out in the desert of Arizona are newsworthy to those of us who obsessively cover the auto industry… and pretty much nobody else. But when the auction house roll out the ambulance that supposedly transported the body of President John F. Kennedy after his assassination, well, the rest of the world stands up and takes notice.

Adding more fuel to the fire of intrigue surounding this one-of-a-kind machine are questions as to whether or not this 1963 Pontiac Bonneville ambulance is legit. Did it really carry JFK? We have no idea, and there are a number of documents and plenty of speculation supporting both sides of the discussion – we’re content to stay out of the debate. And either way, we’re curious to see how it performs after a week’s worth of national news.

In any case, all eyes are now on this controversy-filled auction. Check out the official listing page for the might-be JFK’s ambulance and be sure to keep an eye on the live streaming feed at Speed.

Are you playing Speed’s Online Fantasy Bid Game? If not, test your auction pricing mettle by guessing what a series of featured vehicles will end up bringing at the auction block – you could end up winning a prize, like an Apple iPad. Enjoy!

*Update: The ambulance ended up selling for $120,000… which we’d say means the bidders weren’t convinced of its authenticity. Or, it means someone just scored an amazingly significant car at a major discount.

Barrett-Jackson 2011: Rick Hendrick’s 2002 Ferrari 360 Modena F1 Spider *Update: w/video

2002 Ferrari 360 Modena F1 Spider at Barrett-Jackson 2011

Are you playing Speed’s Online Fantasy Bid Game? If not, this is the perfect chance to start, as it’s just about to hit the auction block – Bid away, you could end up winning a prize, such as an Apple iPad. These Ferrari 360s can typically be had for anywhere from $75,000 to $95,000… but this is Mr. Hendrick’s personal low-mileage car and it’s on the Barrett-Jackson stage, so our guess is that a $100,000+ winning bid is certainly possible.

With that out of the way, let’s take a look at this particular machine. Saying that Rick Hendrick owns a couple of cars is like saying the crowd at the 2011 Barrett-Jackson auction likes to throw back a couple of drinks. As an auction night marches on, the bartenders tip jars fill up faster and prices start to climb. Rick Hendrick is hoping they don’t cut anyone off because a few of his cars will be rolling across the stage… including his 2002 Ferrari 360 Modena F1 Spider.

Looking splendid in its traditional red paint, the drop-top Italian sports car shows just 1,936 miles on the odometer. Only 379 convertible paddle-shift cars were built and this one was kept inside when the weather was anything other than sunny. We’re guessing it drove it a little more aggressively than he plans to drive his new Chevrolet Volt.

Check out the official auction listing here, and head on over to Speed to watch live streaming coverage of all the festivities.

*Update: Click past the jump to watch the Ferrari go across the block.

Beau Boeckmann is a huge Evel Knieval fan… he also happens to be the president of Galpin Auto Sports, which is tied to the largest Ford dealership in the world. To honor his hero, Boeckmann commissioned a limited run of customized Ford F-150s. Coming across the stage at the 2011 Barrett-Jackson auction will be the 2002 Ford F-150 Evel Knievel Gladiator; the prototype truck built to showcase the entire run and it’s identified as #000 of 2,000.

This 2002 F-150 wears custom Evel Knieval-themed paint complete with the blue and white stars and stripes running the length of the vehicle. Under the hood is the familiar 5.7-liter Triton V8 engine while a set of Boyd Coddington wheels outside and red, white and blue leather seats inside help set this limited-edition pickup apart.

Mr. Knieval used this has his personal vehicle towards the end of his life. All 19,023 miles have been used to shuttle Evel to events around the country, including an appearance together on The Jimmy Kimmel Show.

Check out both the the trucks official auction page on Barrett-Jackson, and watch Speed’s live online coverage here. Are you playing Speed’s Online Fantasy Bid Game? Barrett-Jackson 2011: A tale of two Challengers *Update: w/video

2010 Dodge Challenger at Barrett-Jackson 2011

2010 and 1970 Dodge Challengers at Barrett-Jackson 2011 – Click above for high-res image gallery

A 2010 Dodge Challenger would be a wonderful addition to any garage. A limited-edition version painted Furious Fuchsia is an excellent way to pay homage to the Challengers of yore. Another way to pay? Buy lots 1251 and 1251.1 at the 2011 Barrett-Jackson auction; a 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 listed as #135 out of 400 Furious Fucshia examples and a 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A wearing a similar paint scheme.

The two Challengers are being auctioned off together and the winning bidder will have a garage that Mopar fans across the country will drool over. The 2010 Challenger is fully loaded, sports the same pink, black and white color combination as the 1970 example and has just 1 mile on the odomeeter. The 1970 Challenger T/A has a 340 six-pack V8 under the hood and it’s paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The car is a numbers-matching example and comes loaded up with options.

Since the 2011 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction has so far been a middle-finger to the recession, we expect this double-car lot to fetch a handsome sum. Make your guesses in the comment section… we’re hoping to see $200,000… but we may be a little high.

Check out the official auction listing for the 2010 Challenger and the 1970 Challenger T/A, and head on over to Speed to watch live streaming coverage of all the festivities.

*Update: Video of the Challengers crossing the block is available after the jump.

Hyundai Veloster teaser

Hyundai Veloster flashes its LEDs for us – Click above to watch video after the jump

Hyundai is bringing its hotly anticipated sports coupe to the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, and it appears from a new teaser video and microsite that that the car will indeed be called Veloster, ending months of speculation that the affordable model could be named something else (Tiburon, FS, π, etc.).

Hyundai has also released a video of the Veloster, but it’s pretty low on the fulfillment meter and heavy on the teasing. The clip, which you can watch after the jump, tells us the Veloster will have a direct-injected engine, a dual-clutch gearbox, hit an estimated 40 miles per gallon and will come with Bluetooth connectivity. At this point we can only stare at the pretty blue LED lights seen above and continue to pour over camo-clad examples in spy shots.

*UPDATE: Through some Photoshop wizardry, readers Brendon and APV have managed to provide a better look at the Veloster. Click to see Brendon’s image & APV’s image. Thanks to both of you!

Official: Toyota recalling 1.1M Corolla and Matrix models over stalling fears *UPDATE

Filed under: Sedan, Recalls, Safety, Hatchback, Toyota

2005-2008 Toyota Corolla/Matrix – Click above for high-res image gallery

toyota matrixToyota has been in the hot seat this year for its high-volume safety recalls, has issued yet another action that covers its 2005-2008 model year Corolla sedans and Matrix hatchbacks. Approximately 1.13 million vehicles are affected by a problem which could cause the 1ZZ-FE 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine to stall. Three accidents have been reported thus far, though Toyota hasn’t confirmed that these incidents were indeed caused by this engine stalling issue.

To fix this problem, Toyota will replace the engine control modules on the recalled vehicles starting in mid-September. Owners will be notified by mail in the coming weeks and the service will be provided at no charge.

This is not the first time this year that the Corolla and Matrix have been the subject of safety issues. In early 2010, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigated almost 750,000 2009 and 2010 model year vehicles for a potential steering issue, and Toyota provided a free fix for customers. An official recall was not issued, though, as Toyota maintains that this problem is not a safety concern.

Follow the jump to read Toyota’s official press release.

*UPDATE: We mustn’t forget that the Pontiac Vibe is built on the same architecture as the Corolla/Matrix, and General Motors has just issued a press release (available after the jump) stating that certain 2005-2008 model year Vibes are being recalled for this same issue.
