BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe: Spy Shots

Like it or not, the majority of BMW 3 Series variants are on their way out, and the 4 Series models are hotly embroiled in the testing needed to replace them. We’ve now driven the basic 4 Series, seen spy photographs of the 4 Series Convertible and both versions of the M4 and today we get a better-than-ever look at the 4 Series Gran Coupe.

And, mostly dependent on your personal disposition towards four-dour coupes, that look should be a pleasant thing. The long, swooping Gran Coupe may be roughly similar in size to the related 3 Series GT, but it has been sculpted with beauty in mind rather than crossover function. We expect that those details still hidden by the body cladding here, mostly front and rear, can be filled in by simply remembering what the standard 4 Series looks like and squinting your eyes a bit. Subtlety is thy name, BMW variants.

As for the mechanicals, well, we expect to have the very same greasy bits under the hood and beneath the car that are found in the 4 Series lineup, too.

Look for the 4 Series Gran Coupe to be revealed in earnest in 2014, and for the thing to arrive in showrooms soon after as a 2015 model.

Video: Gran Turismo 6 to get exclusive concept cars from Aston, BMW, Nike and more

Vision Gran Turismo video

Much like a real conflict, the console wars being waged between Microsoft and Sony spill into a number of different battlefields and theaters. Home to some of the fiercest fighting is the racing genre, which sees Microsoft’s Forza Motorsport series go head-to-head with Sony’s Gran Turismo series. While there’s been plenty of press about Forza, GT has just struck back with some news that we aren’t sure Turn 10 Studios and Microsoft can match.

When Gran Turismo 6 arrives on the Playstation 4 on December 6, it’s with the promise of a huge suite of free, downloadable content featuring some of the finest cars from manufacturers, design houses and brands from across the globe. The staggered release will see the free content distributed from 2013 to 2014, although it’s unclear just how many cars will be distributed in total or in each car pack.

Vision includes concepts from Alfa Romeo, Alpine, Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, General Motors, Honda, Infiniti, Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot, SRT, and Volkswagen, along with vehicles from legendary design studios like Bertone, Italdesign Giugiaro, and Zagato. Following in the footsteps of previous GT games, global brands like Nike will take part as well. Conspicuous by absence are past GT partners Citroen and Red Bull, although we doubt that this is a comprehensive list. We’re expecting plenty of surprises when DLC starts arriving.

This news is a blow to the Forza series, which while impressive in its own right (and this author’s preferred title), has seemingly struggled to have the same degree of legitimacy and exclusivity inherent in the titles from Polyphony. Gran Turismo 6 is slated for a December 6 debut. Check back here for more info and a full write-up of the new game before then. Until then, scroll down for a trailer on Vision Gran Turismo and a complete press release from Polyphony.

Report: Sony readying Gran Turismo movie with 50 Shades producers [w/poll]

Gran Turismo 6 screencap showing Nissan GT-R Nismo racecar

Video game franchises turned into Hollywood blockbuster movies have certainly come a long way since the days of Super Mario Bros. and Double Dragon, yet each new adaptation still gives us pause as moviegoers. Even so, we’re prepared to momentarily suspend our cynicism upon learning that Sony is readying a Gran Turismo big-screen treatment, following on the heels of Dreamworks’ Need For Speed movie plans.

According to The Wrap, the movie is said to be proceeding under the direction of Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti, producers of Fifty Shades of Grey and The Social Network, with Sony executives Elizabeth Cantillon, DeVon Franklin and Hanna Minghella keeping a close eye on the project.

While not originating from a video game series, The Wrap notes that the Fast and The Furious series has become Universal Pictures’ most bankable franchise, triggering a run on car-related movies as of late. Other auto films set to hit the theaters soon include Ron Howard’s Rush and Snake and Mongoose, both based on historic motorsports battles.

No word yet on when the movie may see theaters, but it’s likely that fans of the franchise will doubtlessly have their copies of Gran Turismo 6 (shown above) before the film’s opening night.

Report: Are you the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe?

BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe

BMW has previously confirmed that it plans to build a production version of the 6 Series Gran Coupe Concept that it unveiled at the 2010 Beijing Motor Show, and these plausible-looking patent filings appear to give a glimpse at the car’s final design. Much like BMW’s latest batch of concept cars – the M5 and 6 Series Coupe, notably – the “finished” product doesn’t stray too much from the original concept car, save, of course, the traditional dumbing-down of air intakes and wheel sizes.

The 6 Series Gran Coupe is expected to slot in between the BMW 5 Series and 7 Series in terms of both size and price, and will likely use the same range of turbocharged six- and eight-cylinder engines that we see in those models. While not as overly swoopy as its competitors, the 6 Series Gran Coupe will be poised to do battle with the Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS for four-door coupe luxury supremacy.

Report: 24 new track logos discovered on Gran Turismo 5 website

Gran-Turismo 5 promo at El Capitan – Click above to watch the video after the jump

There are some truly fanatical Gran Turismo gamers out there. Case in point? GT Planet Gamer Yonis was searching the GT5 website when he unlocked the key to a treasure trove of unused track titles. Yonis reportedly stumbled upon the image directory in a GT5-specific part of the site, and none of the tracks are available on the game.

el capitanOur first thought when we saw the track logos was that the folks at Polyphony Digital could find it in their hearts to offer the tracks at a future update. GT Planet points out that El Capitan was already spotted at the Red Bull “Horse Power” trailer, so we know at least some of these tracks can be on the way to our PS3s. Another possibility is that Polyphony Digital could be saving the tracks for a later pay-for-play add-on to GT5 like the Need for Speed franchise did with the Ferrari Racing Pack for Shift.

Head over to GT Planet to check out all 24 track logos, and you can hit the jump to watch the GT5 trailer with El Capitan one more time.

Gran Turismo 5 gets big 608MB patch

Gran Turismo 5 patch

Getting ready to fire up Gran Turismo 5 this morning? Polyphony Digital would like you to wait a few moments, because there is a patch that needs to be downloaded… and it’s 608 megabytes. Don’t fret though, According to Eurogamer, this update brings a few new interesting features:

Seasonal Events: Fresh racing events that allow GT5 users to compete against each other to win rewards and experience points. Leader boards will allow you to see where you stand compared to the rest of the world.

Online Car Dealer: A new dealer lot that will focus on popular and rare used cars. This is a nice change of pace from the constant stream of odd JDM Civics and Subaru 360s that seem to wind up in our Used Car lot.

Online Race Rewards and Experience: Just like it sounds… this adds rewards and experience points for races won in online competitions.

Mechanical Damage: It was made available for online races but has now made its way to the offline races as well.

HUD: You can disable the HUD display for a full-screen view of the action.

Improved Rewards: The rewards for certain challenges, such as the AMG Driving Experience, have been increased.

GT Academy officially launches as of 12/20/2010

We are still learning more with regards to what exactly is included in this mega-update, but word on the virtual street is that this ought to be a solid early Christmas present for Gran Turismo 5 fans.

Why The Most Anticipated Driving Game Ever Is Not A Must Buy

Gran Turismo 5: Lamborghini Miura
Gran Turismo 5: Review – Click above for high-res image gallery

1,000 cars. Hundreds of events. 71 track variations. Six years in development. There are lots of numbers to throw around and lots of numbers behind the latest release of Gran Turismo, the version that fans of the franchise have been aching for while suffering through delay after delay. Gran Turismo 5 is finally here, and in plenty of ways it’s the best installment that the storied franchise has seen to date.

However, it’s also the least polished release, least complete feeling and seemingly the buggiest – yes, even worse than the infamously rushed Gran Turismo 2. It’s a frustrating mix of amazing content and glaring shortcomings that will leave even the most devout GT fanboys and girls with mixed feelings. But, of course, the full story is rather more complicated than that. So let’s get to it…

Gran Turismo 5 Course Maker

Gran Turismo 5 Course Maker – Click above to watch video after the jump

As of right now, we’re a little more than a week away from the latest official release date for Gran Turismo 5. Thanks to the ridiculous frequency of delays, we aren’t exactly betting on having the game in our hands on November 24. But if, like us, you’ve been confounded by the repeated launch setbacks, you’ll likely find this latest video intriguing. Apparently one of the biggest reasons the game has been pushed back is the addition of a new course creator that allows players to generate their own tracks.

That means that with a little patience, you can cook up just about any combination of turns, elevation changes and the like, and then share them with friends. Something tells us we’re going to be working on getting Virginia International Raceway down pat for awhile. Hit the jump to see the clip for yourself.
