Mad Men go racing: Ridley & Tony Scott developing Le Mans period drama

Le Mans the film

Everybody loves Mad Men. It’s a hit TV show that has something for everyone. Heck, it even features some nice old cars, like the pimpin’ Lincoln that Betty Draper inherited from her father, and discussions around the office on marketing import cars for the first time in America. But what the series really needs – well, what we really need, anyway – is some good ol’ classic racing action. Enter Hollywood producers Ridley and Tony Scott.

The British brothers’ production company Scott Free just signed on to a project called The Drivers. It’s based on Wallace A. Wyss’ book “Shelby: The Man, the Cars, the Legend,” which was optioned for the screen and is reportedly being turned into a television drama.

The series is set to follow the daring drivers from the U.S. and Europe who raced the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the 1950s and 1960s – one of the most exciting periods in racing history with plenty of material to draw on. There’s no telling at this point when the project will begin filming, let alone air, but the notion of a Mad Men-style show set at La Sarthe has got our TiVos twitching already. Thanks for the tip, Peter!

Turn 9

Teaser reel for new web series Turn 9 – Click above to watch video after the jump

Matt Farah, longtime friend of Autoblog and host/producer of The Smoking Tire, pinged us this weekend to let us know about a new project he’s involved with: a scripted web drama called Turn 9. Basically, it’s a car-flavored variation of the Entourage formula, following the career of fictional race driver Kyle Turren and his buddies. In addition to the requisite parties, hot rides, and bikini-clad eye candy, Turn 9 is set against a backdrop of real racing series and will feature appearances by real drivers and celebrities as the story unfolds.

Farah plays lead character Turren’s crew chief (aptly named “Matt”) and is basically responsible for handling all the car-related stuff on the program. Sounds like fun, and since network TV utterly fails at car shows, we’ll be sure to check out Turn 9 when it premieres online. Hit the jump for a brief teaser reel, and if you don’t already, be sure to follow Matt’s ongoing exploits at TheSmokingTire.com as well.

Tivo Alert: Mid-Ohio ALMS race to be shown Sunday as 90 minute docu-drama

Last week’s American Le Mans Series race at Mid-Ohio was a nail-biter right down to the checkered flag with lots of action in each of the four classes. Unfortunately, the race wasn’t shown live on TV… though it was streamed over the interwebz. If you missed the action the first time around, you can catch yourself up this Sunday in an interesting new way.

Intersport Productions, the creators of one of the greatest racing films ever, Truth in 24, has applied its skills to the Mid-Ohio footage. The cameras were rolling throughout the weekend and the editors have spent this week putting together a 90-minute special that apparently goes beyond just the race to tell a narrative about the whole process of competition. The docu-drama, called Road Warriors, will air this Sunday, August 15, at 12:30pm EDT on CBS.
