Video: Watch Werner Herzog’s intense anti-texting-while-driving documentary

People, if there are any doubts as to just how dangerous texting while driving is, you need to watch this documentary, entitled From One Second to the Next, created by Werner Herzog for AT&T and co-presented by Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile. The short film starts out by saying that more than 100,000 accidents occur each year by someone who is texting while driving, and then proceeds to tell just four stories that feature people affected (and devastated) as the result of a distracted driver.

The image above is the aftermath of one of the incidents that killed two men, but each of the stories describe the anger, pain, regret and even forgiveness of these easily preventable accidents. This video, which is posted below, is part of the It Can Wait campaign aimed at getting people to pledge not to engage in dangerous driving distractions, including texting, e-mailing and surfing the internet.

‘What On Earth!’ documentary shows how cars might look to aliens

what on earth screen grab

What On Earth coverThere’s a classic The Far Side comic where two aliens, cleverly disguised as traffic lights, discuss eliminating the Earth’s population slowly, one at a time. The joke, of course, is that things aren’t always what they seem.

Apparently, filmmakers Les Drew and Kaj Pindal had a similar idea back in 1966, when they made the animated short called What on Earth! The nine-minute movie is a satirical look at Earth from outer space. Specifically, when Martians arrive on our blue rock, they assume, based on the observable conditions, the automobile is the dominant species. It’s a warm and funny little video, especially the part about how getting crushed and heading to the junk yard is an individual’s final contribution to society. The Film Board says, “This animated short proposes what many earthlings have long feared – that the automobile has inherited the planet. When life on Earth is portrayed as one long, unending conga-line of cars, a crew of extra-terrestrial visitors understandably assume they are the dominant race. While humans, on the other hand, are merely parasites.”

What On Earth! was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Short in 1967, but lost to something called The Box. Produced by the National Film Board of Canada, the movie was shown in theaters and on ABC television in the US in the 1960s. Now, it is available for your viewing pleasure simply by clicking below.

Video: Malcolm Bricklin documentary The Entrepreneur gets official trailer

Subaru 360s, Fiat X1/9s, and even an electric bicycle – Malcolm Bricklin has been involved in the sale of each of them. You can even thank him for the loathed Yugo, which he brought to the US.

Bricklin’s most recent adventure of note was bringing Cherys to the US market. That deal, which should have seen Chinese cars on US shores by 2007 fell through. Bricklin sued, claiming he lost money on start-up costs and for expected profits.

Now, there’s a documentary, five years in the making, on the Chery business. Directed and filmed by Bricklin’s son, Jonathan, The Entrepreneur follows the jet-setting executive to various meetings as he tries to secure funding and manufacturing contracts along with the internal discussions about the business itself.

The Entrepreneur is available on on-demand cable, iTunes, Hulu, and SnagFilms. Check out the trailer below.

Easier Said Than Done rally documentary

Combining moving visuals – slow-motion camera shots, impossible angles, beautiful scenery and, of course, ridiculously fast rally cars – with compelling storylines is a sure-fire way to win some friends in the Autoblog offices. And that’s exactly what the video you’ll see below has to offer.

As a teaser for a full-length documentary called Easier Said Than Done that’s slated to be released on September 28th (internet release coming on October 1st), this video succeeds in whetting our appetites for the rest of the show – promising footage shot in eight countries over a period of 18 months – while leaving enough to the imagination that our ridiculously short attention spans aren’t left too far behind.

Check out the video below, then set a reminder in your calendar for the end of September to watch the rest.

When Ayrton Senna died at 34, he left a gaping hole in a sport that’s cherished by tens of millions around the world. Seventeen years later, the documentary about his life entitled Senna has finally been shown to crowds at the Sundance Film Festival after a long gestation period, and the early reviews are glowing.

Screenwriter and Executive Producer Manish Pandey shared with the Sundance audience that he already showed the film to Ron Dennis, current chairman of McLaren Automotive and former boss of the successful McLaren Formula One racing team. Dennis is a tough man, known for being emotionless and extremely efficient with his time. However, after watching Senna, Dennis reportedly cried for 10 minutes and then spent the next two hour discussing the most un-tamed racing driver the world has ever known.

Follow the jump to watch a trailer for the film. With any luck, this documentary’s showing at Sundance has already bagged it a distributor for wider release in the U.S.

Wherever You Want to Go documentary – Click above to watch video after the jump

We’ve spent lifetimes obsessing over the next stage in the human transportation saga. Constantly unsatisfied with the humble car, we’ve looked ever onward toward rocket ships, jet packs and personal flying contraptions of varying design to take care of ferrying us to work in greater comfort and speed than ever before imagined. BMW seems to be willing to wade into that universe with its new four-part documentary on the future of mobility called Wherever You Want to Go. The film delves into the various forms of what we think of as futuristic transportation by speaking with everyone from Buzz Aldrin to Syd Meade, Robin Chase and Marissa Mayer.

If you’re thinking this all sounds like an automaker rallying the troops against the internal combustion engine, don’t be so sure. The short trailer for the film features a ride in a Superbird clone, so it can’t be all bad. Hit the jump to soak up the trailer. BMW will release the films on February 1, 8, 15 and 22nd, so stay tuned.

AT&T's The Last Text

AT&T anti-texting documentary “The Last Text” – Click above to watch video after the jump

AT&T launched the “It Can Wait” campaign earlier in the spring of 2010. The idea behind the movement is to create more awareness about the dangers of texting and driving. In order to create more visual impact, AT&T has commissioned a documentary called The Last Text, and it focuses on a few young lives that have been impacted or even cut short due to distracted driving caused by a text message.

The video may play a bit heavily with the emotional subject matter, but it also helps drive home a very important message – Many lives can be ruined in the blink of an eye – all because you had to read or send that text message. Put your phone down for a minute then hop the jump to watch The Last Text.
