Kia Hamsters

The lovable, anthropomorphic hamsters from Kia are known for electronic dance music, head bopping, and of course, a certain funktastic Korean box-on-wheels. With a new Soul on the way, the adorable rodents need to be ready to appear alongside the resculpted crossover. Only one thing could get them ready in time – cue the training montage.

The commercial, called Totally Transformed, features Lady Gaga playing in the background, along with gratuitous footage of the hamsters shedding some weight. The Kia designers also get some attention, as they’re hard at work designing the hamsters’ new ride. Take a look below for the full, 91-second spot.

Video: Nissan had to re-edit this commercial two times to placate Aussie ad watchdog [w/poll]

Filed under: Budget, Marketing/Advertising, Safety, Videos, Hatchback, Nissan, Australia

Nissan Australia was required to re-edit its Nissan Pulsar SSS commercial three times before it satisfied the government.

Nissan recently aired a commercial in Australia for its Pulsar SSS hatchback – think of it as a five-door relative of our Sentra – in which a couple is seen hastily making their way to the hospital ahead of giving birth. But the ad you can watch now isn’t the same ad that aired originally – in fact, Nissan had to re-edit the commercial twice before the Australian Advertising Standards Bureau (ASB) would accept it.

According to Go Auto, the original ad received complaints that it depicted unsafe and reckless driving, including speeding, following cars too closely and screeching to a halt upon arriving at the hospital. One of the complaints reportedly read: “The advertisement promotes driving behavior (rapid acceleration/deceleration/changes of direction) that is counter to sound medical advice regarding the carriage of heavily pregnant women in motor vehicles.”

In the first edit, Nissan lowered the vehicle’s engine noise, removed the woman’s speech urging the man to drive faster (“Go, go, go!”) and inserted a disclaimer that read “Filmed under controlled conditions,” according to Go Auto, but all of that still wasn’t enough to appease the ASB.

Nissan went back for some more editing, which resulted in the tamer commercial that’s airing in Oz today. Nissan even removed extra shots to fit in slightly slow-motion video of the Pulsar driving, to be sure viewers don’t think it’s speeding. Even so, there’s still an enjoyable hook to the ad – watch it by scrolling below.

Video: Lexus IS commercial made with Instagram photos

Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Lexus, Luxury

Facebook was so 2010, so it’s no surprise that automakers are taking advantage of newer social media applications for their marketing purposes. Most recently, Lexus invited more than 200 followers on Instagram (“Instagrammers”), along with their smartphones, to make a commercial of the 2014 Lexus IS using hundreds of their photos of the car strung together into a video.

Instagram, taking advantage of smartphone cameras, is an application that allows users to shoot, edit and share photos or video online with friends and strangers alike. Lexus’s stop-motion Insta-commercial is unique as far as commercials go, with each photo in the sequence sporting a personal touch thanks to the app’s photo editor. But, even more impressive is the ability of social media to bring people together for, and involve them in, a commercial shoot. All of which you can watch below. Stay tuned after the commercial to get a look behind the scenes at the making of it all.

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe – Click above to watch video after the jump

Mercedes-Benz has dropped a new ad for the 2012 C63 AMG Coupe onto the Interwebs. Rather than bombard viewers with a litany of boring horsepower figures, the marketing gurus at the Silver Arrow turned toward our emotional side. The spot focuses on a young couple who have taken a break from eating strawberries in bed to meditate on how best to spend their day. A quick frolic through the mountains, perhaps? How about a dash along the coast? Either would be perfectly acceptable to our pallet, but the young lass in the video has other ideas.

The whole spot is interspersed with images of the C63 AMG Coupe doing what it does best – consuming tarmac to the delight of all on board and looking like a stack of cold $100 bills while it does it. Hit the jump to check out the ad for yourself. Thanks for the tip, AMG!

Report: Bullitt car chase being recreated in San Fran for commercial

The car chase from Bullitt – Follow the jump to watch the video

Hot on the tail of the music video for Sharam’s “Fun” comes word that an advertising agency will attempt to recreate the chase scene from Bullitt in downtown San Francisco once again. According to SF Appeal, Duroo Productions, Inc. is set to film a spot for a Korean-based movie theater chain hoping to strut its new 4D movie experience. From the sound of things, the city’s financial district will see its fair share of car chases and gun play with actors firing blanks at each other. San Francisco’s film commission is warning individuals in the area not to be alarmed or call the police if they hear a commotion.

The action is taking place today on Montgomery, Bush, Sansome, Sutter, Pine, Washington and Clay streets between 6:00 AM and 8:00 PM, and while residents will have access to their domiciles, they may have to wait a few moments until the crew is finished shooting a particular scene. For fun, the original Bullitt chase sequence is embedded after the jump. Thanks for the tip, Schirmer!

Video: Audi A1 commercial highlights big pieces of a small car

Audi A1 commercial

Audi A1 commercial is big, yet small – Click above to watch the video after the break

The Audi A1 may be small, but the latest home-market spot for the supermini highlights the car’s features in a big way. How big? How about a towering wall of guitar amplifiers that’s really an enormous Bose speaker like those you’ll find inside the A1? Or a movie screen that’s actually the Navigation System display.

We have no explanation why you’d want to jacklight rabbits, as depicted in the commercial, but the A1’s HID headlamp clusters carry out the task. Like those rabbits, Audi’s going to need to proliferate its vehicles worldwide if it wants to meet its goal of becoming the largest luxury automaker in the world, and the A1 is one of those bunnies.

Whatever the case, you’ll definitely want to see it for yourself in the video pasted after the break.

GM commercial shoot goes extraterrestrial

incident at inyokernGeneral Motors commercial shoot turns extraterrestrial – Click above to watch video after the jump

What goes on behind the scenes at a commercial video shoot is usually relatively boring stuff. Lighting is rigged up, shots are established and footage is captured. Unless you’re a stunt driver required to to spend all day pushing the laws of physics to the limit, hanging out at a commercial shoot can be a numb-numbing affair. Autoblog reader Alexander Van Walsum was on hand to capture some behind-the-scenes footage of a recent General Motors commercial, and rather than string it together in a standard way he decided to have a bit more fun with it.

Proving that the magic happens in editing, Alexander pieced together his footage and turned a commercial shoot into a mashup about an Area 51-esque event. You can catch a glimpse of a Chevrolet Volt, and a wider shot showing off even more of the Bowtie-wearing family. Click past the jump to watch Incident at Inyokern.

Report: Ford sues Nissan over commercial with bikini models in Brazil [w/video]

Nissan Tiida Ford Focus commercial with bikini models from Brazil

Nissan calls out Ford Focus with Brazilian bikini models – Click above to watch the video after the break

In the advertising world, the gentle ribbing of competitors is almost a given. Whether its dish soap, paper towels, computer companies or automobiles, poking a little fun at your main rivals is the name of the game. But sometimes a company or its advertising agency goes a little too far, and that sometimes means the long arm of the law is dredged up and forced into service.

Such is the case with corporate rivals Nissan and Ford. Apparently, Nissan ran an advertisement in Brazil for its Tiida (known as the Versa here in the States) that may be most notable for its complete lack of any actual Nissan products. Instead, the commercial revolved solely around the Ford Focus, and specifically its base asking price, which is 3,000 reais ($1,806) higher than the Tiida.

No harm in pointing out that your product is cheaper than a competitor’s, right? Well, apparently that depends on how you go about it, as Ford took exception to the use of the two rather irritating rappers and a gaggle of scantily clad bikini models drinking champagne and dancing provocatively around the Focus, explaining how they live in the lap of luxury by overcharging customers. Yeah, it’s kind of funny.

Did Nissan go too far or is Ford making much ado about nothing? Check out the video after the break, then feel free to sound off in the Comments.

Lexus LS 460 owner attempts to recreate classic commercial – Click above to watch video after the jump

Remember that early Lexus commercial from 1989? You know the one, where an LS 400 is sitting on a dynamometer and makes a run up to 145 miles per hour, then the camera pans to the hood, where a large pyramid of crystal champagne glasses calmly sits? An Arizona Lexus owner decided to recreate that clip using his much newer LS 460.

So, does the more advanced and powerful LS fare as well the second time around? Certainly, the owner has a rather different approach, so click past the jump and see for yourself (we’ve also posted the classic ’89 ad for those that need a refresher).

Detroit City Council honors Chrysler’s Super Bowl commercial [w/video]

Chrysler 200 Super bowl ad

Chrysler’s Super Bowl commercial – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Chrysler’s two-minute long Super Bowl commercial won nationwide praise for its uplifting, can-do message about the embattled city of Detroit. And if you think the novella-sized spot for the Chrysler 200 was popular across the U.S., then you can imagine how the ad played within the borders of the city itself.

The Detroit Free Press reports that the Detroit City Council paid homage to the Eminem ad with an official recognition on Tuesday. The council tipped its hat to Team Pentastar for painting the city in a positive light, adding that the spot “helped to paint a positive portrayal of our beloved city on a national level by filming the entire commercial inside the city of Detroit and showcasing all of our great landmarks.” Chrysler brand CEO Olivier Francois said that the ad paid homage to a great city and the home of the auto industry.

When we first saw the two-minute commercial we couldn’t help but think that Chrysler should have featured the hot-looking 300 instead of the Sebring-derived 200 (even though the former is built in neighboring Canada). But in retrospect, we’re thinking that the power of this ad made the car itself an afterthought in the long run. Hit the jump to watch the commercial again.
