Volkswagen iPhone test drive

Volkswagen’s iPhone test drive – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Volkswagen its flexing its tech-savvy muscles with a new form of interactive advertising that combines print and online media. They’ve written a new Apple iPhone app that shows how prospective customers how some of the company’s available advanced technologies work out on the road.

To use the app, participants hold their iPhone above a VW ad in a magazine or newspaper with a road printed on it. Following the curve of the road with the phone shows how some of the car’s safety features respond to real-world driving conditions.

Want to test VW’s adaptive headlights? Switch on the app and put it in Adaptive Lights mode, and the headlights on your virtual VW will follow the curve of the road. In Lane Assist mode, the phone vibrates when your car gets too close to the edge of the virtual road. There’s also an Adaptive Cruise Control mode, which puts a second virtual car in front of your VW and keeps them an equal distance apart as you move across the page.

Volkswagen’s virtual test drive is a neat way of combining different forms of media, an advertising tactic likely to be more common in the future. As a means of figuring out whether or not you want a Volkswagen, well, we’d just as soon head to the nearest dealer for a real test drive, but for now, you can head over to the jump to see how it all works.

Audi A8 L Security

Attention wealthy car shoppers looking for mobile security beyond an alarm and LoJack. Your new chariot of protection has arrived and it’s wearing Four Rings in the grille. Audi is preparing to launch a truly battle-ready premium sedan and it’s called the A8 L Security.

Produced in a heavily guarded section of a secure workshop (no cell phones allowed), the A8 L Security is an armor-plated luxury sedan certified by the German government for compliance with the VR 7 ballistic protection standard (2009). Basically, that means this A8 L is capable of taking numerous rifle bullets and small explosive hits such as hand grenades and anti-tank mines.

All of that protection adds weight, and the Audi A8 L Security employs measures to help counter -balance the added heft. Under the hood is a 6.3-liter W12 engine that produces 500 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and both work together to push the heavy four-door from zero-to-60 miles per hour in around seven seconds.

As you may recall, Audi showed off its last generation A8 L Security in 2007, and that car cost $685,000. No word yet on a sticker price for this latest version, but armoring ain’t cheap.

The full list of features on this rolling luxury tank is hugely impressive, and it’s available for you to read in the press-release posted after the jump.

Officially Official: Citroën DS4 blends compact size and luxury

Citroen DS4

Citroën previewed its next-generation design language at this year’s Geneva Motor Show with the DS High Rider concept, and the first production car to use these shapely new lines will be the DS4 five-door hatch, which makes its debut at the Paris Motor Show in just a few weeks.

The DS4’s two rear doors are nicely incorporated into the overall shape and a set of muscular wheel arches and sloped roofline give the high-riding hatch a sort of coupe-like profile from some angles. LED running lamps top the front foglight surrounds, and Citroen’s minimal use of chrome lend the DS4 an upscale appearance. Additionally, those big arches will be nicely filled with a range of large wheels – 19-inch alloys will round off the top-end models.

Inside, Citroën has created a cabin that is both luxurious and spacious, with a tall, raked windshield providing a large, clear view of the road ahead. The chunky-funky steering wheel, sculpted dashboard and center stack look fresh and modern, though we’ll admit that the tiller’s design stands out a bit in what is otherwise a sleek, modern cockpit.

When it launches in 2011, the DS4 will be available with five powertrain options. Two diesel engines will be available, producing 110 and 160 horsepower, as well as three petrol-sippers, cranking out 120, 155 and 200 horsepower, depending on your need for speed. The three gasoline engines were co-developed with BMW, and the full range of powerplants can be mated to either six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

We’ll be checking out the new DS4 in person in the not-too-distant future. For now, Citroën’s official press release beckons after the jump and a high-res gallery of shots is below.
