Motoring pits the Holden VF Commodore HSV GTS agains the Ford Falcon FPV GT R-Spec

Australia’s Motoring has put together a little video on two of the great performance vehicles available down under – the Holden VF Commodore HSV GTS and the Ford Falcon FPV GT R-Spec. And while both FPV and the Falcon might be on their way out, there’s still plenty of time for a little head-to-head comparison between the two.

The cars aren’t all that well evenly matched, though. The Ford boasts a 5.0-liter, supercharged V8, which the Aussies measure out at 449 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. The HSV, though, with its Corvette-derived, 6.2-liter, supercharged V8 is just too powerful – 576 hp and 545 lb-ft of torque.

Predictably, it doesn’t end too well for the Ford. As the guys from Motoring point out, the new VF Commodore is just too new and too good, with its extra power and its adaptive dampers (GM’s excellent MagnaRide). Interestingly, Motoring did point out that the Holden’s electric steering is better than the Ford’s hydraulic steering, which is a lot like a Porsche purist saying they prefer water-cooled engines to air cooled.

The Aussie site did a full write up on the two vehicles, which we’d strongly encourage you to take a look at. It’s a really solid read. You can also take a look at their video comparison, down below.

Video: Ford FPV Boss 335 GT makes us wish we were Australian

Ford claims that the 2011 Boss 335 GT packs the most-powerful V8 ever offered in an Australian sedan. And after seeing four-time Australian Touring Car champ Allan Moffat at the wheel, we’re inclined to believe them.

The Boss 335 GT squeezes 450 horsepower from a supercharged, DOHC 5.0-liter V8 based on the same mill powering the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 in the U.S. With 10 more horsepower than our Mustang and two more doors, the Boss 335 GT is likely one of the most efficient ways of getting you and three friends arrested Down Under.

Unfortunately, that privilege is reserved solely for the Australians, as there’s zero chance the Boss 335 GT will come to our shores. Hear the 335 GT in action after the jump. Thanks for the tip, Dan!

Video: Australian safety council urges you to slow down… naturally

“Enjoy The Ride” PSA – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Remember the Embrace Life PSA that urged auto occupants to use their safety belts? It’s a beautiful safety ad with a very powerful message. The Road Safety Council of Western Australia must have been watching, because they’ve taken their safety message to the next level of serenity.

Beyond the jump is a three-minute ad titled “Enjoy The Ride.” The first two minutes of the video explain how important it is to slow down in every day life. If you don’t, the PSA explains, you’re on the fast track to early aging, heart disease and even erectile dysfunction. You wouldn’t know this is an auto safety spot until the last minute of the PSA, when the real message reveals itself. Slow down and enjoy the ride. Hit the jump to view the video – just be prepared to breath a little deeper… you may want to join yoga after this. Hat tip to Chris!

And they’re off, ladies and gentlemen. After a tumultuous offseason that saw Robert Kubica sidelined from a rally crash, two Lotus-Renault teams embroiled in a naming rights dispute, the arrival of Pirelli tires to replace Bridgestone and the cancellation of the Bahrain Grand Prix due to political unrest, the 2011 Formula One World Championship has kicked off in earnest with the Australian Grand Prix.

Heading down under to Albert Park, both titles are Red Bull’s to defend. But preseason testing showed strong competition coming from the likes of Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes GP. Would reigning champion Vettel and company be able to hold them back to start off their defense as strong as last year? Follow the jump to find out.

Vettel snags pole for Australian GP

Red Bull is once again looking strong as it heads into Formula One’s opening round in Australia. Red Bull ace and last year’s champ Sebastien Vettel took pole position for Sunday’s race by nearly a second in Saturday qualifying. Mark Webber, Vettel’s teammate and Australia’s hometown hero, wound up third behind Lewis Hamilton.

Red Bull claims that neither of its drivers used their KERS (Kinetic Energy Regeneration System) during qualifying, which is usually good for .3 seconds a lap. That means, in theory anyway, Vettel has a potential 1.5 second advantage over the competition when the green flag waves tomorrow.

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton is sandwiched between the two Red Bulls in second, while teammate and 2009 champ Jenson Button sits fourth behind Webber. Fernando Alonso is fifth in the first of the Ferraris ahead of Vitaly Petrov for Renault. Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg is seventh, ahead of the second Ferrari of Felipe Massa. Kamui Kobayashi sits ninth for Sauber and Sebastien Buemi rounds out the top 10 for Toro Rosso.

Ben Thomas and his Rancho Deluxe Roadster – Click above to watch video after the jump

Australia’s obsession with automobiles is as strong as the passion we feel for them here in the states. Bandit Films recently brought us a clip showing one man’s love for his Ford Falcon Squire. Now it’s produced a new film showing one man’s ode to the dry lakes racers from a bygone era in California’s automotive history.

Dubbed the Rancho Deluxe Roadster by its owner Ben Thomas, this 1932 Ford Model B is powered by a flathead V8 and just drips with classic hot rod cool. Thomas parks the car at his shop, Rancho Deluxe, which specializes in working on American cars from World War II through the sixties. It’s also a place for folks to hang out, have cake and coffee, then talk about cars. Click past the jump to see Ben Thomas talk about his roadster and his passion for cars.

A person’s love for his or her car is a beautiful thing. Some people realize that an automobile can be more than just a means of transportation. Kyle from Australia, the man behind this video, is one such person, and his 1963 Ford Falcon Squire is one such beautiful thing.

Filmmaker Tom Broadhurst sat down with Kyle to talk about the car and resulting work is a visual treat. Kyle knows that, unless serious financial troubles pop up in the future, the Squire is now part of the family. There’s no news here or information to digest, this post is about the basic admiration that a true enthusiast has for his machine. Click past the jump and enjoy The Squire.

Video: Australian flood sweeps away parking lot of cars

Australian parking lot flood

Australian parking lot flood – Click above to watch video after the jump

Australia is under assault by rain and undergoing one of its worst natural disasters in its history. Flood waters in the state of Queensland have ripped through numerous cities. Over 30 lives have been lost and many others are still missing. Homes are ruined and many more are at risk as the surge heads into Brisbane; Australia’s third largest city. Damage estimates are already being pegged as high as $13 billion. One person was recently able to capture just how quickly a stream of water can turn into a raging river.

Filming from the balcony of their Toowoomba office, the video recorder watched as water levels grew higher until they were high enough to begin picking up parked cars (including a hapless Subaru WRX STI) and carrying them away. Hop the jump to see the clip, which includes a bold SUV driver at around 1:10 that refuses to lose his 4×4 to the rising waters (note how he appears to take the time to lock the front hubs on his Nissan). Also, If you feel like helping out, Australia could certainly use it right now.
