Video: Audi launches 2014 TDI models with hilarious spot

Audi TDI gas station

Audi has unveiled a set of new television spots that seek to continue the company’s proselytizing of diesel-fueled luxury cars to the American pubic. With TDI versions of the A6, A7, A8, Q5 and Q7 available for its 2014 model year range, this is a subject that’s obviously near and dear to the hearts of Audi marketers.

The first commercial, The Station, makes a play on the fact that many car buyers in the US don’t associate luxury cars (in this case an A8) with those green-handled pumps at the “gas” station. The second commercial, Range, is a lot more informative (albeit less fraught with screaming and slowmo), discussing just how easy it should be to find a diesel fueling station in your long-range TDI before you need to fill up.

Continue on below for a look at both new commercials, or to have Audi explain them to you in great detail, via its press release.

Official: Audi Sport Quattro Concept to race into Frankfurt

Filed under: Concept Cars, Frankfurt Motor Show, Coupe, Hybrid, Performance, Audi, Design/Style

Audi has pulled the official wraps off its new Sport Quattro Concept, which will be debuted at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. The automaker is understandably keen to draw inspiration from its classic Quattro line of automobiles, specifically the original Ur-Quattro from 1980 and the short-wheelbase Sport Quattro that took part in rally racing and set a record at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in 1987. A massive dose of modernity comes courtesy of its 700-horsepower plug-in hybrid powertrain.

There is a clear link in the styling of the Sport Quattro Concept to Quattro coupes of the past, from the large flat surfaces that make up its C pillars to the blisters over the fenders and the basic headlamp shape (equipped as they are with Audi’s Matrix LED technology). Pay special attention to the car’s grille, which introduces a slightly new design language that is expected to be seen in the next generation of Audi’s mainstream production models.

The interior of the Sport Quattro Concept is a refreshing departure from Audi’s admittedly attractive and useable design, with sharp lines and lots of visible carbon fiber. There are seats for four occupants inside, along with a comparatively generous cargo area measuring 10.59 cubic feet.

Underhood sits a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine mated to an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission to all four wheels with assistance from a disk-shaped electric motor and liquid-cooled, 14.1 kWh lithium ion battery pack. Power comes in at 700 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, and, of course, it’s sent to all four wheels. According to Audi, the Sport Quattro Concept can travel over 30 miles on electricity alone, and it can accelerate to 62 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 190 mph.

Check out the Audi Sport Quattro Concept in our high-res gallery above, and read all about it in the press release below.

Official: Audi designs science fiction car for Ender’s Game movie [w/video]

Filed under: Videos, Audi, Design/Style, TV/Movies

Audi is no stranger to product placement in movies, but the upcoming sci-fi adventure movie, Ender’s Game, will be the first time the German automaker has ever unveiled a “purely virtual” vehicle design in a movie. As the movie’s star car, the futuristic Audi fleet shuttle quattro was created by Audi Design as a “vision for the future world.”

This new movie car comes almost 10 years after one of our favorite Audi movie cars ever, the Audi RSQ that was prominently used in the 2004 sci-fi action film, I, Robot. Looking back, the RSQ obviously used cues from the Audi R8, but it’s unclear if the fleet shuttle quattro has any design implications for future Audi production models.

The movie, based on the best-selling novel of the same name, stars Harrison Ford and Asa Butterfield, and it premiers in the US on November 1. Audi has provided images of the fleet shuttle quattro, and Summit Entertainment has released its latest trailer for the movie, which is posted below along with an Audi press release.

Report: Audi Q7 E-Tron confirmed?

Filed under: Hybrid, SUV, Technology, Crossover, Audi, Electric, Diesel, Luxury

2011 Audi Q7 3.0T S-Line front three-quarter

Rumors out of Australia say we’ll be seeing a new variant of the Audi Q7 when the next-generation models bows in a few years. Joining the diesel and gas range will be the second production member of Audi’s E-Tron family, which was introduced by the R8 E-Tron, but will actually see production in the form of the A3 E-Tron.

Speaking with Audi’s managing director in Australia, Andrew Doyle, Car Advice asked what the future held now that the electrified R8 had effectively been shelved. “I don’t see it [R8 E-Tron] as a major thing for us. We’ll launch [locally] with A3, followed by Q7…”

The new Q7 will share its platform with the Volkswagen Group’s two other large SUVs, the Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg. But, as Car Advice is quick to point out, the Porsche and VW variants are slated for arrive next year – the second-generation Q7 won’t arrive until 2015. Doyle refused to explain the discrepancy.

Car Advice seemed to think the Q7 E-Tron will end up being a gas-electric hybrid, but we wouldn’t be so sure. Audi has hinted that it will tap into its Le Mans-winning, diesel-electric know-how for an eventual production car, and considering the Q7 has a fairly strong association with diesel, both in the US and abroad, it seems like it’d be a solid candidate for the race-proven technology. This could also explain the extra lead time between the arrival of the Q7 and its platform mates. Looks like we’ll need to wait until 2015 to find out.

Official: Audi first to bring LTE to the car later this year

Filed under: Performance, Technology, Hatchback, Audi, Luxury, Infotainment

It appears Audi will be the first to market with in-car LTE service later this year. We knew that BMW was working on LTE integration last year with its ConnectedDrive, and we’ve been told that, by the end of 2015, most General Motors products will have it, but LTE can be ordered on the S3 Sportback (pictured) as soon as July. Other models in the A3 line-up will add the option in November.

Inserting an LTE-enabled SIM card into the Audi’s MMI navigation will make the S3 a WLAN hotspot that can quickly shuffle high-definition content from the cloud to the cockpit. It will also bolster Audi Connect services like Google Earth, Facebook and Twitter, e-mail, and streaming internet radio.

We’ve been told that we’ll be offered the LTE option when the 2015 A3 sedan gets here in the spring of 2014. Since the service requires you to provide a SIM card, we expect that costs and data caps will be a matter between you and the service provider; speaking of which, Audi hasn’t announced yet who that provider will be on this side of the Atlantic. The press release below has more details.

Official: 2014 Audi RS7 priced from $104,900* in the US [w/video]

Filed under: Car Buying, Performance, Hatchback, Audi, Luxury

2014 Audi RS7

Audi has officially priced the svelte 2014 RS7 from $104,900 (*not including $825 for destination), undercutting its sole competitor, the BMW M6 Gran Coupe, by $8100. Even when we’re talking about six-figure super sedans, that’s not a small amount of money. And soon, this class of sleek stormers will be joined by the updated Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG 4Matic.

With its combination of a twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter, 560-horsepower V8 engine and Audi’s excellent Quattro all-wheel drive, the RS7 is expected to hit 60 miles per hour in just 3.7 seconds, 0.4 seconds faster than the manufacturer estimate for the M6 Gran Coupe.

We’ve already given the RS7 a thorough shakedown in Europe, and we came away quite impressed with just how stunning this Audi is, both to drive and to look at. Now that we’ve got a price to go along with the performance and style, this Audi is even more appealing – in our high-dollar dreams, anyway. Take a look at a short video from Audi, as well as the official press blast, below.

Video: Audi teases Frankfurt reveal… is it the A8?

Audi teaser with mystery sedan under covers - 2015 A8? - video screencap

Audi has already rumored to have plans to reveal a 650-horsepower Sport Quattro Concept at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in September, but it also seems that we’ll be getting our first look at the 2015 Audi A8 as well. Based on a panned-out shot of a teaser video, we can clearly see that this is a new sedan model, so it makes sense that is the updated A8 since we’ve already seen recent spy shots of that car that seemed to be almost complete.

In the short video, all that we can definitely see is the Audi logo in the grille, a five-spoke wheel with cross-drilled, ceramic disc brakes and a small portion of the front fender that has an almost mirror-like shine. We’ll find out for sure in September, but until then, check out the teaser video posted below.

Report: Audi to blitz 1.5M sales goal two years ahead of schedule

2013 Audi Q5 front three-quarter

Audi doesn’t seem to be having any trouble of hitting its relatively audacious sales goal of two million units by 2020 – it’s already on pace to eclipse 1.5 million sales two years ahead of schedule. According to Reuters, the Volkswagen-owned brand rode a wave of sales in China and the US to pace the early goal, with 780,500 deliveries at the halfway point of 2013. Particularly hot models include the Q5 crossover seen above and A4 sedan. Unless things go poorly in the second half of the year, 1.5 million sales shouldn’t be an issue.

That leaves it trailing BMW by just 24,000 units for the global luxury sales crown. If sales trends keep up, Audi will succeed in hitting its goal of two million units and besting its cross-country rival in Munich. Audi CEO Rupert Stadler smells blood, telling German newspaper Handelsblatt, ”We have overtaken Mercedes-Benz and we are now closer to BMW than ever before.”
