Video: 2014 Mercedes S65 AMG caught undisguised at video shoot

Hot on the heels of a video showing Mercedes-Benz testing its 2014 S65 AMG sedan around the Nürburgring, here’s yet another glimpse of the German automaker’s luxury flagship sedan, which is set to go on sale in March of 2014. Though the new S65 AMG won’t be officially unveiled until this November’s LA Auto Show, eagle-eyed Gnepiah caught it naked on camera during a recent commercial shoot in the Netherlands.

The video shows a few exterior modifications as compared to the outgoing model, including more chrome on the front grille, shiny mesh on the front bumper, and new multi-spoke alloy wheels. But the most exciting change is one we can’t see: the S65 AMG’s 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 engine, which is expected to produce more than the current model’s 621 horsepower and will certainly make for a quicker ride (as we previously noted, we could be looking at a run as quick as 3.6 seconds).

Watch the video below to see the new S65 AMG for yourself – and don’t miss the cameo of the 2014 S63 AMG at the end.

Video: 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC AMG is period gangsta

Filed under: Classics, Coupe, Performance, Videos, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury

Electric Federal 560 SEC AMG video

Lord Vader comments aside, this is a seriously mean looking Mercedes-Benz. Owned by designer Kahren Arakelyan, this 560 SEC has been breathed upon by AMG, and has had its 5.6-liter V8 bored out to a nice, even 6.0 liters (which we suppose should make it a 600 SEC AMG). The AMG treatment has turned this old SEC into a quick, menacing beast.

The video, by Electric Federal, provides a different look at the predecessor to today’s CL-Class, and what it means to Arakelyan, an Armenian that discusses growing up in his homeland, surrounded by Ladas until his dad came home in a legendary Mercedes sedan – the 450SEL 6.9. The “over-engineered” Benz was like nothing the young man had ever seen before.

Arakelyan’s passion for Mercedes was born from that experience, and came with him when he arrived in the United States. In the video, he gives a pretty thorough walk-through of his SEC, while fans of engine noise can listen to the intermittent bursts from the 6.0-liter AMG V8. Scroll down for the full video.

Video: Chris Harris pits Fiesta ST against Mercedes G63 AMG in 0-60 battle… sort of

Filed under: Performance, Videos, Ford, Mercedes-Benz

Chris Harris on Drive screencap

Vehicle performance tests are serious business, with reputations made or broken by things like braking distance, top speed, and lateral g-forces. King of the metrics, though, is the 0-60 run, which for unknown reasons has become the benchmark for what truly makes a car a performance machine.

Now, Chris Harris from Drive has turned the whole idea behind the sprint to 60 on its ear. Taking a new Ford Fiesta ST, Harris asks a simple question: would the ST be quicker to 60 on its own, or on a trailer being towed by a Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG?

It’s a fair question, really. The Fiesta Harris tested hit 60 in 7.2 seconds on a slightly uphill section of runway. It should be noted that Harris quotes his ST at 182 horsepower, which is about 15 ponies less than what we’re getting in the US, so these numbers might not hold up all that well against an American model. The G63 AMG, meanwhile, is a 536-horsepower monster, powered by a twin-turbo V8 that, able to propel the big SUV to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds without towing a Fiesta.

So, is the Fiesta ST quicker with or without some AMG aid? Have a look below to find out.

Report: Mercedes S65 AMG to bow in LA, S600 in Detroit

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show, LA Auto Show, Hybrid, Sedan, Performance, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury

Between the launch of the 2014 Mercedes S-Class, the debut of the S63 AMG (shown above) and reports about a new “super S-Class,” the Mercedes-Benz flagship sedan has been in the news a lot lately. According to Car and Driver, Mercedes plans to introduce three new flavors of the latest S-Class at the Frankfurt, LA and Detroit auto shows.

We already heard that the plug-in hybrid version will be introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, but this new report says that the V12-powered S65 AMG and S600 models will soon follow. At the LA Auto Show in November, the S65 AMG will hit the stage with a twin-turbo V12 expected to produce more than the current model’s 621 horsepower. This should make for one quick S-Class, no doubt able to shave a few ticks off the 2014 S63 AMG’s 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds.

Following the S65’s debut, Mercedes will reportedly take the wraps off its S600, which will use a less-powerful version of the mighty V12. The 2013 model year S600 produces 510 hp from its 5.5-liter twin-turbo V12, which is enough to propel the sedan to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds. The updated version should only improve those figures. Stay tuned.

Official: Brabus’ 730-hp 2014 Mercedes S-Class is for those who can’t wait for AMG

Filed under: Aftermarket, Sedan, Performance, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury

You can’t even buy the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class yet, but Brabus is ready to help you prepare for it. The German tuning house has engineered a suite of upgrades for the sedan that does just about everything but provide a button for its own aftermarket tune. The heart of any Brabus is the engine, and there are three heart transplants to choose from: there’s the B50S for the S550 that adds 65 horsepower, for a total of 520 hp and 604 pound-feet of torque; the B63 takes the S63 AMG up to 650 hp and 737 lb-ft; and the B63S rings the bell with 730 hp and 785 lb-ft. A top-speed limiter allows the option of capping velocity at either 155 mph, 168 mph or 186 mph.

As if the rock-crushing power and eye-watering speed weren’t enough to set the barge apart from others, an aero kit, two styles of monoblock wheels ranging from 19 to 21 inches, a lowered suspension and a sport exhaust will add the florid plumage to your shiny new peacock. Brabus can tell you even more about it in the press release below.

Video: BMW M135i vs. Mercedes A45 AMG in Euro small-lux throwdown

Filed under: Performance, Videos, Hatchback, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, UK

BMW and Mercedes-Benz – please, please, please bring the M135i and A45 AMG hatchbacks to North America. For as long as we can remember, buyers in the New World have been forced to look longingly at Europe and Great Britain and the excellent super hatches that are so routinely offered there. And while we’re quite content with the Ford Focus ST and Volkswagen GTI, having a 360-horse five-door with a premium, content-rich interior sounds quite nice.

Our envy for Europe has grown after watching the latest video from Drive, which stars Chris Harris, the Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG and the BMW M135i. This latest battle between MB and BMW takes place on both road and track, with Harris providing a running commentary. If you’re interested in the upcoming Mercedes CLA45 AMG, you should pay special attention to the section on the A45, as the two are essentially fraternal twins. While the video is a bit on the long side, it provides a comprehensive rundown of both cars, giving those of us in North America just a small taste of what we’re missing. Check it out by scrolling below.

Quick Spin: 2013 Mercedes A45 AMG 4Matic [w/video]

Filed under: Performance, Europe, Videos, Hatchback, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury, Quick Spins

United States customers desiring one of the new smaller AMG models from Mercedes-Benz will really enjoy their 2014 CLA45. It’s swift, authoritative, more alive in your hands than any other AMG model has ever been, and it’s the only compact practical AMG you’ll ever be able to get anyway.

Little ghost-like leaks keep on happening from some apparent “source” in Germany, telling young cub reporters from the US that the A-Class hatchback range is also coming to the land of hashbrowns. The way we read it, the A-Class, however, will never come to the States, folks, at least not in this decade, anyway.

More’s the pity, because, as we and all others noticed at the recent drive event in Germany, for both the A45 and the CLA45, it’s the hatch that truly pulls no punches on dynamism. The CLA has clearly been massaged to be just a touch to be more civil than the excitingly bratty A45.

Driving Notes

  • As we said in the recent First Drive for the CLA45, the A45 is a decidedly different concoction from the usual straight-line marauders of the AMG lineup. The chassis is dramatically more alive and communicative, and we really like it.
  • From now on, AMG is putting some form of 4Matic traction under every car. That means some compromises – good and not so – will happen. In this case, the hang-on all-wheel-drive unit creates a much more capable sporting drive versus a straight front-wheel-drive setup.
  • That said, some people who talk like they’ve driven the car will shower both the A45 and CLA45 with their prejudiced derision. They’ll proclaim – no matter what we say – that these are cheapo overpriced front-drive Euro econoboxes. It also means that there’ll be more of these great cars for those of us who dig ’em.
  • While we dashed around on roads and Autobahn, our track time for this event was relegated to AMG Performance chassis-prepped A45 AMG Edition 1 units, a limited-run setup for Europe that pimps the ride out to around €57,000 base price (roughly $75,000 due to exhilarating European taxation policies and an overvalued Euro). Ride along for a spot of this action, in the video below.
  • Realistically, an A45 would need to start at around $45k in the US. The fully tricked Edition 1 as at this track, however, would bring about $60k for starters. Enough to make American blog comments go ballistic.
  • The optional matte Mountain Grey Designo exterior paint and darkened multitudinous-spoked 19-inch AMG wheelset of our street-tester A45, go together like ham and eggs. This unit had everything on it apart from the Edition 1 trickery and overly excited aero bits, and we think it’s all the better for it.
  • The experts on hand at this drive event finally admitted that the ratings of the elasto-kinematics fore and aft of the suspension were, in fact, different for the A45 versus the CLA45. The handling that is possible with the hatch is pure premium hot and it’s a sensation we’ve never had before in an AMG.
  • Mercedes conservatively claims a 0-62 miles per hour acceleration time of 4.6 seconds for the A45, but we’re certain a 4.2 will be possible and repeatable.
  • This M133 2.0-liter motor is a remarkable piece of work, and it meshes really well with the seven-speed AMG dual-clutch, with shift action that is equal to that in the SLS AMG GT. A manual six with good heel-and-toe pedal placement would have been entertaining, but the automated DCT is hot stuff.

The 2013 Mercedes A45 AMG has already gone on sale in its initial markets in Europe and it is bound to be a popular with compact-performance addicted Europeans. People can say whatever they want about the front-drive chassis, but in Europe, this is how compact sportsters roll, and we wouldn’t be at all surprised to see this exact car on the World Rally Championship circuit by next year. The hang-on 4Matic unit is a solid solution for this niche-monger car, and we regret only that we will never drive it on our favorite Stateside highways and byways.

Video: Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG officially teased in mini video

Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Videos, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury

The followup to the Mercedes-Benz S550, the S63 AMG, will sport a biturbocharged V8 that will likely turn out around 550 horsepower. The new engine is probably the 5.5-liter, biturbocharged V-8 that’s been popping up in everything from the ML63 to the E63 AMG. The front fascia is more aggressive, which shouldn’t come as a surprise, while a meaty exhaust setup can be found out back.

We managed to pick all that up from a short, 17-second video posted by MB. The original video that unveiled the S63 AMG has since been pulled down, making this YouTube clip the best look we now have at the new super sedan, at least until the Germans give up the goods for real.

Be sure to check out the video below, along with our original posting on the S63 AMG.

Report: Jaguar turns down offers to join V8 Supercars, questions AMG, Volvo participation

Filed under: Motorsports, Sedan, Performance, Jaguar, Australia, Luxury, Racing

2014 Jaguar XFR-S

Rumors have swirled in recent weeks that Jaguar may be the next manufacturer to join the V8 Supercars racing series, made popular in Australia but now well-known in other parts of the world as well. Sadly, Jag’s participation is not to be. In fact, it would be “insane,” according to Jaguar Land Rover Asia Pacific Managing Director David Blackhall, for it to accept either of the two offers it has received to bring Jaguar into V8 Supercars.

Not only is Jaguar not interested in entering V8 Supercars, says Blackhall, it also fails to understand the recent entries from AMG and Volvo. “I don’t know what it does for AMG to get flogged by a V8 Commodore week after week, but it’s their brand, their issue. And the same thing will happen to Volvo to be honest.”

Judging by Blackhall’s statements to motoring.com.au, after not-so-serious consideration, the automaker decided the monetary commitment it would take to compete for wins would be more than any potential exposure would be worth, despite the fact that Jaguar has a 5.0-liter V8 to go along with what would seem to be a tailor-made rear-wheel-drive chassis. For what it’s worth, one offer would have had Jaguar putting its name across an engine made by someone else, an option that was flatly turned down.

In related news, don’t expect to see Jaguar make a return to Formula 1, either. “We’ve been there. And the fizzy drink that took over [Jaguar’s F1 team] is not doing too bad. But we wouldn’t go back again,” said Jag’s head honcho Adrian Hallmark.
