Official: Bulleta Motors launches RF22 supercar… kind of

Irvine, California-based supercar maker launches the Bulleta RF22 and RF22-R.

New, Southern California-based supercar maker Bulleta Motors says it has launched the Lotus Evora-based RF22, its first vehicle. If the car allegedly designed by Samir Sadikhov also reminds you of the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor fighter jet, then the RF22 successfully embodies its inspiration. Maybe a little too much; the jet struggled with oxygen-delivery and software problems through the long course of its development, and Bulleta seems to be facing an existential crisis in the early going.

Bulleta claims to offer two versions of the mid-engine supercar: the RF22, with 400 horsepower and 355 pound-feet of torque, and the RF22-R, which makes 505 hp and 390 lb-ft. Both versions are equipped with a supercharged 3.5-liter V6 and a six-speed manual transmission. The R model will do 0-60 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds, Bulleta states, but the 400-hp model can do it in 3.9 seconds – still extremely quick. For those who want just two pedals, there’s also an option for a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

But before we delve further into what makes an RF22, it must be noted that there is controversy surrounding the car’s very existence. Carscoops published a piece on the supercar and reportedly received a response from Kevin Smith, Lotus Cars USA marketing and PR communications executive, saying that the RF22 is “vapor,” or not real. He told the publication that Lotus isn’t selling Evora chassis to Bulleta to make RF22s.

Bulleta Motors’ co-founder, Ferris Rezvani, then got into the mix, sending e-mail messages to Carscoops saying the RF22 is, in fact, a real car. Rezvani claimed Bulleta Motors isn’t dealing with Lotus Cars USA, only Lotus Cars UK, and that Kevin Smith wouldn’t know about the RF22. While the RF22 is seeming more like a pipe dream than a production reality, we’re still holding out hope that the sleek supercar will be seen on the road someday… we’re just not holding our breath.

Video: Audi launches 2014 TDI models with hilarious spot

Filed under: Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Audi, Humor, Diesel

Audi TDI gas station

Audi has unveiled a set of new television spots that seek to continue the company’s proselytizing of diesel-fueled luxury cars to the American pubic. With TDI versions of the A6, A7, A8, Q5 and Q7 available for its 2014 model year range, this is a subject that’s obviously near and dear to the hearts of Audi marketers.

The first commercial, The Station, makes a play on the fact that many car buyers in the US don’t associate luxury cars (in this case an A8) with those green-handled pumps at the “gas” station. The second commercial, Range, is a lot more informative (albeit less fraught with screaming and slowmo), discussing just how easy it should be to find a diesel fueling station in your long-range TDI before you need to fill up.

Continue on below for a look at both new commercials, or to have Audi explain them to you in great detail, via its press release.

Official: 2014 Jeep Cherokee musters 22 MPG city, 31 highway

Filed under: Car Buying, Government/Legal, Crossover, Jeep

2014 Jeep Cherokee

Production and media drive delays included, there has been no lack of press surrounding the 2014 Jeep Cherokee. With the most recent delay reportedly due to powertrain calibrations, we’ve been waiting to see how the Cherokee’s fuel economy looks against the highly competitive compact CUV segment. Thanks to the EPA, we now know the fuel economy figures for the newest member of the Jeep family.

Arguably, the Cherokee has the most modern powertrain in its class with an updated base engine, all-new V6 and all-new nine-speed automatic transmission, but its fuel economy figures are simply on par for the segment. Still nothing to scoff at, though. According to fueleconomy.gov, front-wheel-drive Cherokee models with the base four-cylinder mill will top out the lineup with 22 miles per gallon in the city and 31 mpg on the highway; opting for four-wheel drive with this engine drops the figures to 21 city and 28 highway. Get even crazier with the option list, and the new 3.2-liter Pentastar V6 will get you 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway in two-wheel-drive form or 19 city and 27 highway for 4WD.

If you’re wondering how that stacks up among compact CUVs, head on over to Automobile Magazine for a full fuel economy breakdown for the segment. The controversially styled crossover hits dealers this month, and we’ll be driving it in just a couple of weeks.

Report: Ferrari cuts Toronto lawyer a deal to replace his flooded California [w/video]

Filed under: Convertible, Performance, Etc., Videos, Ferrari, Canada, Luxury

Canadian lawyer Howard Levitt's 2010 Ferrari California gets stuck in a flood on his way to the airport.

A Ferrari might be the last vehicle you’d want to be driving when streets are submerged in water, but Toronto lawyer Howard Levitt was unfortunate enough to be behind the wheel of his $200,000+ Ferrari California when the tunnel he was driving through started to fill up. It was July, when parts of the Canadian city were flooded, but he was determined to make his flight to a court appearance the next day. So Levitt abandoned his metallic blue supercar in the middle of the street and took a cab to the airport, the National Post reports.

The car subsequently was totaled, and the insurance company covered the damage, so after completing his court assignment (and a column for the Financial Post that was due the same day), Levitt began to search for a replacement for his California – driving his 1994 Dodge Viper in the meantime. He decided on a 2014 California in the same metallic blue to replace his 2010 model. When he approached Ferrari to put in an order, the Italian marque was waiting for him, having heard of his mishap. The company offered him a “very generous” deal on a 2014 model; an undisclosed amount less than the after-options retail price of around $300,000.

The new Ferrari is expected to be delivered to Levitt in November, and we can only hope another flood doesn’t catch him off guard. We’re not so sure Ferrari would offer him another “very generous” deal. Feel free to watch the short video below, despite its rather static nature, which we included to precisely show the sad fate of Levitt’s fallen California.

Spy Shots: 2015 Lexus GS F is camo-free and frisky

Filed under: Spy Photos, Sedan, Performance, Lexus, Luxury

Lexus GS F Spy shots

Other than some missing badges and (hopefully) a not-yet-finished rear fascia, what you see here is an undisguised look at the long-awaited Lexus GS F high-performance sedan. Lexus’ answer to the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, the GS F has been spotted again.

Unlike our previous spy shots, though, this time around, the sporty Lexus has been caught testing on the Nürburgring, so our spy shooters have managed to get a look at the car from all angles. Building on the aggressive styling of the GS F-Sport, the GS F gets bigger air intakes and a lower chin spoiler up front. Like before, we see the signature stacked exhaust outlets, but they still seemed roughed into rear fascia, which gets an aero-aiding diffuser.

We still only have guesses as to what will be under the hood, but a 465-horsepower, 5.0-liter V8 sounds good to us. Expect to see the production GS F on the road by 2015.
